Why? Without great SEO, a fantastic idea is left uncovered. That’s not to say that a site with great search engine optimisation is going to succeed though. There are 100s of sites out there that fail to convert customers that visit their websites every single day; a loss of opportunity.

Ask yourself these questions:

Have you focused any time on analysing conversion rates?

Are your SEO efforts really worthwhile if your website doesn’t convert?

It’s not hard; you can easily increase conversion rates in a few minutes:

#1 – Use a CTA that is bold, possibly a different colour to your website template

#2 – Make the checkout process simple; the fewer clicks the better

#3 – Make use of great copy; put it in the right place to really sell

#4 – Do you offer just one payment option? Offer more!

#5 – Make sure categories are in a clear format. Customers know what they want and you need to show it them; quickly!

How do you think the above changes will help?
The obvious answer is; they increase conversions.

<colgroup>
<col width="174" />
<col width="175" />
<col width="175" /> </colgroup>

Great SEO, but low conversion rate

Great SEO, great conversion rate

Unique visitors (monthly)

100,000

100,000

Conversion rate

1%

1.5%

Sales (monthly)

1,000

1,500

Sales value

£100

£100

Average profit per sale

£25

£25

Total profit

£25,000

£37,500

I’ll ask again; how do you think the above changes will help?

Dig deeper this time. A website that really “sells” products and services well, and is easy to use, means consumers can find more products. Sales increase, but sales value with increase too!

<colgroup>
<col width="174" />
<col width="175" />
<col width="175" /> </colgroup>

Great SEO, but low conversion rate

Great SEO, great conversion rate

Unique visitors (monthly)

100,000

100,000

Conversion rate

1%

1.5%

Sales (monthly)

1,000

1,500

Sales value

£100

£115

Average profit per sale

£25.00

£28.75

Total profit

£25,000

£43,125

So there you have it. SEO is important, but don’t avoid conversion rates!

Vibe Tech Media is a UK online marketing company that helps people think outside the box; making their presence in the internet known. Try and relate this post on outsourcing to the above post on conversion rates.

Between the ages of 19 and 29 I spent several years as either a full or part-time student and had to supplement my paltry student loan “income” by doing all sorts of part time jobs including bar work, handing out flyers, helping out in shops and stores and even busking!

OK the last one is maybe not a real job I guess, but it was pretty good cash and it taught me a very valuable lesson that I could make money doing something that I loved and I could also work in my own time without a boss looking over my shoulder 24-7 or breathing down my neck (Isn’t this counted as harassment these days?)

Some days I would pop out in the morning with my trusty, but rusty guitar and spend an hour on the London Underground – The district line, that’s where all the record companies (and rich folks) were and i’d make a nice little earner.
£20 was considered a very poor result and on average I was pulling in around £40-£60 per hour depending on whether I could be bothered to “work?” or hang out with the other buskers drinking copious amounts of tea and avoiding the transport cops.

Now, i’m not here to tell you guys to learn the guitar and do what I did – those days are over my friend – However, what I will advise is find something where you can utilise your talents and be paid for doing something that you enjoy.

This is where the point of the post is

There are a few micro job sites online and one of my favourites is this one – dedicated to helping students all over the world make a bit of extra cash in their spare time by performing jobs, services or promotion in their own skill set that only takes a few minutes to complete but makes the buyers life a lot easier and cost a lot less than if they were paying a professional freelancer.

How it works

The seller posts their job for free and shares it via social media eg. Facebook, twitter etc.

The buyer orders the job via paypal or credit/debit card (each job is only £5).

The seller completes the work in the allotted time-scale (set by the seller) and delivers the work.

The buyer reviews the work and once they are happy, gives feedback on the completed job.

The seller is paid and withdraws their money to their paypal account.

There are a few things to take into account when posting your jobs:

Only post jobs that take a maximum of 15 minutes – You don’t want to be working for any less than £20 per hour

When choosing how many days the job will take, allow for time differences, holidays etc. – Bad feedback will impact on future sales.

Keep in touch with the buyer and let them know how you’re getting on.

PROMOTE YOUR JOB. This is the biggie! The more you share your job on facebook and twitter etc, the more orders you’ll get, the better your feedback will be and err… the more orders you’ll get!

Well, that’s it folks. I hope you’ll find this post useful. If you did, please show some love with a “like, share, tweet, comment” etc. Have a great day all!

Yellowish Widgets are ACE!

Here’s a post about yellow(ish) widgets which i am using as a SEO example for a potential client. I am publishing this at around ten o’clock on Thursday night (yes, I work late) and am fully expecting to be on the first page of the search engines for the term yellowish widgets within 1 hour.

Here’s some nonsense that i picked up searching for stuff about widgets…

Ok so most of you alcoholics probably knew this already but now glasses have widgets in them. A while back I got a Stella glass from pub, no I didn’t nickit, I asked, and I loved it but my missus broke it.

Anyway I went for a beer with my Nephew on Sunday and they had the same glasses, I asked again and the old girl behind the jump said no. As with the other glass I asked for I just used my charm and she said I could have one.

Why are widgets Yellow?

When I used it I noticed it was producing beer like a fu**g ice cream cone, huge bas**rd head on it. When I looked the bubbles were swirling up from the bottom in a swirly type fashion. I had a look and in the bottom of the glass are two circles with the words Stella Artois in. So I thought it must be a widgety type thing. I did a Google and apparently they have been using them since 1999.

Ideally this post should be around 500-1000 words, but let’s see how we go with around three hundred.

I was going to backdate this post so that when people visited the design guys site they wouldn’t come across this post and think i’d lost it and was off my rocker, but then I thought – hold on. It’s all about testing, testing, testing anyway and as you know SEO is an ever-changing game and to be on top you need to be trying new ideas constantly.

So, i reckon that’s about it – the simplest SEO, all on-page with that unpopular keyword phrase yellowish widgets – be right back with news…

UPDATE: Took me about 15 minutes to be ranked number 1 on Google with purely basic on-page SEO and nothing else. Obviously I went for a keyphrase with low competition, but just goes to show if you know what you are doing and you’re keeping up with good white-hat SEO techniques, you can rank pretty quickly for your chosen keyword or phrase.

To keep this post at the top of google, i would work on stage 2 of my SEO campaign – Off-Page SEO. Although that won’t happen as I’m taking this post down in an hour or so (no, let’s leave it for a while and see how long it ranks for! – I won’t bother with any Off-page SEO… )

Below you can see screenshots of my speedy ranking process…

So there you have it folks… The design guys quick and safe SEO tricks to get your sites to the top of the SERPS above your competition! Simple.

This article looks at a number of simple etiquette do’s and don’ts when it comes to commenting on blog posts, or other users’ remarks.

Link Building

User generated content, through blog comments, is an extremely important aspect of any SEO or link building campaign. That is why link-building articles tell you to focus on blogs that get a lot of visitors, comments, and social media airtime so you can make the most of the guest blogging opportunity available.

One way of building inbound links is to comment on blogs yourself. However, these will be strongly moderated by a blogger looking to protect their reputation and brand, so there are some things you need to know in order to make your comments stand out and get the all-important link.

Don’t Promote

If I were paid for every blog I had seen with a promotional message in the comments section, then removed a short time later, I would be a very rich man indeed. Unless the link or service you post or promote in the comment is actually relevant to the blog, or is reinforcing your point, then do not do it. Many bloggers will not only delete your comment but also mark it as spam, taking away your posting privileges indefinitely.

Many bloggers also share spammers’ names, and if you are posting using a service such as Intense Debate, with one username for everything you comment on, you could have a problem.

Read the Post

If you are a lazy link builder, then the chances are you probably scroll down to the bottom and write “well written, excellent points, thank you.” If you want to actually build a rapport and a relationship with the blog owner, you should read the post and then make a comment that is relevant to the content in the blog. If you are looking for a potential link building or guest blogging opportunity in the future, strike up a conversation by mentioning specific points you agree or disagree with.

Be Polite, Professional, and Courteous

Unfortunately, we are living in the age of the “Keyboard Warrior,” where people can sit and type whatever they want into social media and comment forums without facing any real consequences.

Make sure that all of your comments are polite and respectful at all times, even if you vehemently disagree with what was said. Another common mistake is to get drawn into arguments with fellow commenters, who are all too quick to make a personally charged remark. A simple “thank you for your viewpoint” should diffuse the situation, although you might be best off just ignoring and reporting any such abuse.

Bough SEO is a professional UK-based search engine marketing agency that focusses on everything from technical aspects to keyword research to link building.

The company posted the news a few minutes ago on Twitter, saying this update will affect about one percent of search results.

This is Panda Update 3.9. The previous update, 3.8, occurred exactly one month ago — on June 25th.

Google rolled out Panda initially in Feb 2011 and was designed to remove low-quality/thin content from Google’s search results.

Here’s what Google’s Matt Cutts had to say:

“The goal of many of our ranking changes is to help searchers find sites that provide a great user experience and fulfill their information needs. We also want the “good guys” making great sites for users, not just algorithms, to see their effort rewarded. To that end we’ve launched Panda Changes that successfully returned higher-quality sites in search results.”

What Is On-Page SEO?

On Page SEO is the science of optimizing the contents of a website such that it becomes more relevant to the search engines for particular keywords or phrases. This technique includes the optimization of texts, images, tags, URL structure, internal links, headers, titles etc.

Anything that is uploaded to your site in order to gain higher rankings in the Search Engines is considered “On-Page SEO” For example selecting the proper ALT tag keyword for an appropriate image on your page is one small way to boost that page’s rank.

In a simple definition On Page Optimization is what can be done on the pages of a website in order to make it more search engine friendly in order to achieve good search engine ranking for targeted keywords.

Important Components of On-Page SEO

Here are some important on page optimization components that take crucial part in the improvement of any website.

1. Proper Post Title (H1 tags)
2. ALT Tags (Must use proper ALT tags with targeted keywords)
3. URL structure (One of the most important part in SEO, must contain your main keyword)
4. Meta Description Tag
5. Keyword Density
6. XML sitemap
7. Proper Content (Must be unique)
8. Internal Linking Strategy (Related articles must be properly interlinked within the website)
9. Proper HTML and CSS validation
10. Title Tags

On Page search engine optimization is probably the most important factor in ranking your site highly in the SERPS (Search Engine Results Pages). If on page SEO is excellent 60-70% of the SEO work is done and rest depends on off page SEO.

Off Page SEO is a totally different animal and is summed up below:

What Is Off Page SEO?

Off page SEO is defined as the things you do offline to (or “pointing to”) your website in order to achieve good search engine ranking.

In simple terms off page optimization does not involve any optimization with the contents of the webpage (See On Page SEO above) – instead it is the stuff that you do “outside” of your site eg. building quality (and appropriate) links to improve the page rank of your website. It is essentially building the reputation of your site in order to make the search engines think you are relevant for chosen keywords.

There are several factors that affect off page SEO. Some of the most important ones are listed below.

Factors Affecting Off Page SEO

1. Quality Link Building (In order to improve page ranking)
2. Social Media Presence of your website – This means how active is your website among various social media like Stumbleupon, Digg and many other social media sites. The active presence of your website over popular social media increases the brand value as well as reputation of your website with respect to the search engine’s algorithms. This includes social bookmarking also.
3. Directory Submission (Especially from DMOZ.org)
4. Forum Postings. Forum posting impacts a great deal in offsite optimization. If you participate in forum posting and posts questions or answer to any questions then you are getting a chance to get a good quality link from the forum to your website which will improve the page rank.
5. Anchor Text. This needs to be targeted to your keyword, but like “keyword stuffing” there is a fine line. I advise 30% should be your chosen keyword, 30% your web site URL and 40% mixed eg: Click Here or Read More Here etc.

Off Page search engine optimization is the second most important factor in ranking your site highly in the SERPS (Search Engine Results Pages). Off page SEO counts for around 30-40% of Search Engine success.

Many webmasters, especially SEO newbies, might not know anything about the 200+ signals Google use on their algorithms in ranking websites. There are a ton of websites that talk about this but only a quarter of those were provided.

Based on research from these websites, including Google’s webmaster guidelines and forum discussions, I’ve compiled them all and come up with a list of over a hundred.

What about the rest? They’re probably secrets that no one could ever figure out; only Google knows them. They can’t reveal them due to trading secrets, a delicate part of business.

In addition, The guys at SEOmoz have their own graph about search engine factors for websites. You can refer to the images below:

And oh, there’s two we can add on to that: the Panda and Penguin algorithm updates.

Here’s what I came up with:

The answer to these signals should be yes to achieve best possible rank in Google search engine:

1. Is the keyword preference present in title tag?
2. Is the keyword preference present in meta description?
3. Is the keyword inside the content repeated three times the most?
4. Is the keyword or search term is bolded or italicized at least once?
5. Is keyword included in heading tags?

As far as my sources and knowledge can reach me, these are the only half of the 200 Google ranking algorithm signals I can give you. It is difficult to figure out the other half possible signals otherwise we make unsafe guesses.

However, here are “my” other safe assumptions that I can give to proceed based on my personal opinion:

101. Is the site a problem solver for users?
102. Does the site have adequate categories and tags pages?
103. Does the site have no thin contents in every page?
104. Does the site have a good amount of organic backlinks?

To continue with Panda and Penguin that should be on 105th and 106th, and then extract into a number of sub signals to complete the list of 200. This could include issues of spammy links, duplicate contents, and other factors that the new algorithm updates can hit.

It still all boils down to two most important factors Google actually measures based on their ranking algorithms. Number 1, valuable content, and number 2, a considerable amount of good inbound and outbound links. And that’s it. The other half of 200 signals are probably broken into sub signals only God and Google know what.

You may also have picked up that it is considered one of the most important topics that you need to understand if you are to make your websites stand out from the crowd. That much is true, and if you want to make your business more visible online, you need to know how SEO works. But what exactly is it, and how can you go about using it to your advantage?

What is SEO?

Put simply, SEO is the art of crafting your online publications so as to maximize your visibility when people search for words and phrases that have a connection with products and services you offer. The majority of internet users who are looking for a person or firm to do a particular job will use a search engine to assist them in finding one. Statistics show that most internet users will not look beyond the first page of search results, and often they will not even look as far as the bottom of that – so it’s crucial to get your site ranked highly.

What do you need to know?

Although there are many search engines, there is one site you absolutely must rank high with, and that is Google, whose PageRank measure is considered the most powerful and accurate assessment of a site’s value. Because Google has by far the largest share of the search engine market, if your company does not show well in its results, you will lose a lot of business that you could otherwise be winning. Google is so important that – except in a few very specialized fields – there is no point in optimizing for other search engines and ignoring Google. You can’t afford to do that.

How can you use SEO?

The best way to get a good Google PageRank is to produce a site which has a high level of relevant information. In particular, you should make sure that key phrases associated with your business are used liberally, although not so much that they begin to look unnatural. For example, a budget travel agency’s site might include phrases such as “discount vacation deals” and “best value on short breaks”. It’s also a good idea to use secondary keywords – those which support the central phrases. Using the travel agency example again, those might include things potential vacationers will be thinking about, such as “great deals on travel insurance” and “car rental at airports.”

What should you avoid?

In recent years, the algorithms Google uses to determine PageRank have progressively increased the penalties for sites that use so-called “black hat” methods of SEO. These include chunks of text which simply repeat a key phrase many times over, misleading descriptions in the site’s HTML tags, and – since the most recent round of changes – paid link exchanges. All of these practices are likely to make your site’s search engine visibility worse rather than better. Keep to “white hat” methods such as those outlined above, and you should find that your business becomes more visible – and therefore more profitable.

Today we’re going to be looking at:

Analyzing your (and your competitors) backlinks.

Backlink Diversity.

Backlinking Strategy.

Going Social!

Backlink Analysis

There are a few tools that you can use for this process – My number one choice is SEOmoz’s Open Site Explorer which is free for 3 “goes” per day – If you need more in depth analytics, sign up for their 30 day Free Trial HERE.

It gives you details of everything from Anchor Text, Page and Domain authority, Links to the domain and Total links plus it gives you Social data eg Facebook, Twitter & Google “Likes, Shares, +1, Tweets” etc. Very, very useful.

You can also sign up to the Bing Webmaster tool which is free and it gives you info on your backlinks and anchor text which you can download into a CSV file.

OK, so once you’ve analyzed your links, let’s have a look at the results and see what we can do to get your site ranking again.

Example:

If you have 100 backlinks and 70 of those link using the anchor text “Cat Training” (Hey, I like to be different ok? ) then you will need to build more non “Cat Training” links to bring that 70% down to under 50% which will show a more natural backlinking strategy.
Concentrate on building more backlinks which link with your URL ( eg. http://www.howtotrainacat.co.uk) and also link using anchor text such as “Click Here”, “Check It Out” and “This Link” – You get the idea.

Also check out your other sites and competitors sites that didn’t get hit by Penguin and have a look at their backlinking strategy. This is not sneaky… This is just common sense.

Backlink Diversity

So you’ve worked out how many links you need to build to bring down the percentage of your “Money Keywords”?

Good, it’s time to get to work.

First off, you want to be building links from several different types of sites eg: Web 2.0, Forums, Blog Commenting, Article Directories, Press Releases etc. Don’t just concentrate on one type of site – Google has already penalized sites for doing this.

Diversify the pages that are linked to. If all your backlinks are pointing to your homepage, this will be flagged up as unnatural. Tip: Use longer-tail keywords to deep link to relevant pages on your site.

If a lot of backlinking sites are irrelevant to your niche, try and even that out with links back from similar sites to your own. This is notoriously hard, but does need to be done. Try the following:

Marketing (Social Media, Creating Content then promoting it, etc)

Networking

Paying for Links

Backlinking Strategy

Here’s a few ways you can build up your backlinks (I tend to have a strategy worked out in an excel file so I know exactly what i’m working on from day to day which I can always revisit and tweak – It’s handy I suggest you do the same or similar)

Blog Commenting: Leave interesting, helpful and useful comments on busy blogs in your niche. If these blogs are getting a load of traffic, they will be getting indexed by Google regularly and your comments will also be seen by like minded individuals.

Create Micro Sites: Set up a few micro sites and post content or articles on them regularly including backlinks to your main site. Use sites such as Tumblr, Squidoo, WordPress.com, Hubpages etc.

Go Social 1! Sign up to Twitter, Facebook, Linked In, You Tube & Google + Add selective people that are interested in your niche – DON’T SPAM!

.Go Social 2!: “Interact”, “Like” and “Join” similar niche pages on Social Networks such as Facebook, Twitter, Linked In etc – and post your links on your network pages – These people are interested in what you have to say!

Video: Create compelling content using Windows Movie Maker, Camtasia or Animoto and upload it to YouTube, Vimeo, Viddler etc. The more sites you upload it to, the quicker it will be viewed and/or shared around. Place a link to your site in the video description.

Pinterest: Post images from your site on Pinterest. This will get you a backlink, plus every time it is shared, you get another backlink – good eh?

Social Bookmarking: This is my first port of call when i’m promoting a new site or new post. Ultimate Demon has managed to help me get back to the top of the SE’s just with it’s bookmarking tool. Manually bookmarking, i’d hit the regulars – Stumbleupon, Digg etc.

Create a Press Release: and send it out to the PR Directories.
Here’s a list of the Top 10 Free Press Release Directories:

Free-Press-Release.com

NewswireToday.com

Express-Press-Release.net

BusinessServicesuk

Or again, outsource it on fiverr.com

Guest Blogging: This has become hugely popular over the last few months and can give you great results quickly. Search for blogs that accept Guest Posts (We do at TheDesignGuys – Get in Touch)

Right, that should be enough to be getting on with:) Even if you just put 4 or 5 of these techniques into action over the next couple of weeks, you should see your site moving back up the SERPS.

If you found this useful, show some love! Or if you thought it sucked, how would you improve it? Let’s hammer out some ideas!!

Part 3 coming up soon…
