Hey Folks!

Just a real quick one today, but still pretty useful. I’ve had a few people ask me about this problem so I thought i’d pop a super-fast tutorial together and then people can access it whenever they need it.

On WordPress 2011 theme when you create a single post, you’ll notice that by default it comes up with just one column and without a sidebar. Now, this is fine if you haven’t got useful stuff (or ads, affiliate deals etc) to show people on the sidebar. However, if you’re getting a lot of traffic to some specific single posts, it would be a great idea to let those visitors know about the rest of your content.

Here’s how to add a sidebar to the 2011 WordPress Theme

1. In the Theme Editor (Dashboard > Appearence > Editor), go to single.php and add the following:

<?php get_sidebar(); ?>

In a new line just above the footer code at the bottom of the file:

<?php get_footer(); ?>

Next, go to functions.php (Theme Functions) and find the following at the bottom of the file:

add_filter( 'body_class', 'twentyeleven_body_classes' );

Comment it out (by adding 2 forward slashes // at the beginning of the line) and it will force WordPress to stop differentiating between normal and single post pages.

Simple stuff, but useful nonetheless… Have a great day all!

All you do is copy and paste the adf.ly javascript into your blog then you start making money – seems pretty simple eh?

What is adf.ly?

adf.ly is a link shortener service that converts your link into a tiny one just like bit.ly or goo.gl. The main difference is that adf.ly PAY you each time a user clicks on the link you create. For further information you can visit their website.

Now I’m going to show you this cool little script that can convert ALL your sites links into adf.ly ones automatically. So, everytime a user clicks on a link, it will show a small advertising banner at the top of the page and you’ll make a small piece of cash. Imagine if you had quite a few visitors on your site each clicking say 2 or 3 links – That’s going to add up pretty quickly right?

Here it is:

<script type="text/javascript">
onmousemove = function adfly() {
adfly_id = '3080028'; //replace with your ID
banner_id = 'banner';
for (var i = 0; i < document.links.length; i++) {
var hrefer = document.links[i].href;
if(hrefer.match("adf.ly") || hrefer.match("javascript:")|| hrefer.match("#")) {
document.links[i].href = document.links[i].href;
}else{document.links[i].href = 'http://adf.ly/' + adfly_id + '/' + banner_id + '/' + document.links[i].href;}
}
}
</script>

Just paste it into your BODY tag of your site. If you are using WordPress as your CMS, i’ve found pasting the code into the footer.php file does the trick nice and easily.

Explanation:

This script will convert all your site’s links, EXCEPT adf.ly itself, google adsense, javascript href, and ‘#’ href. You can add any other link as exception such as your own site, advertising link, etc. To do that, just add the new || hrefer.match(“your URL”)) inside the IF section of the script.

That’s it.. Super simple right? I’m going to test this out for a month on a few of my sites and i’ll report back on the results. My only concern is that it could look a bit “spammy” and visitor level could drop OR it could be a tidy little earner. I’ll let you know and thanks for reading!

Show some love with a share, tweet or comment if you found this useful

Hey folks,

We’ve all seen it, the dreaded 404 Page Not Found – that’s it. No more information given, be on your way, nothing to see here, move along…

Wouldn’t it be great if your site had a custom 404 error page which could not only give your visitors the information that they’ve landed on a broken link or deleted page, but also took them back to the homepage or allowed them to search for what they were after in case the erroneous page had just been moved (Check 301 redirects on Google).

In this post i’ve gathered a bunch of my favourite 404 pages which were either unusual, gave me great information or just plain ol’ made me chuckle. Let’s get started…

Have you ever had days when your computer is just ridiculously slow and typing a short paragraph takes you several minutes instead of seconds?

Whether it’s Facebook, Google, the Address Bar, a Blog Post or even Notepad that you’re typing into, the letters show up half a second to 3 seconds later and it takes you an absolute AGE to get anything written. Sometimes the cursor will skip to the middle of the last sentence and it’ll look like gobbledygook (Is that how it’s spelt?;)).

Well I had this problem today and figured “If i’m having this issue, odds on others are having it too” – So I popped over to Google and had a little search.

JEEZ!! There’s a TON of folk having this keyboard lag problem and hundreds of forum threads and blog posts that give you possibilities of what may be wrong with your Laptop or PC. However, most of these places only give you a snippet of what to look for when you’re trying to fix that slow typing problem.

So, I decided to tie them all together and give you the definitive fixes to get your computer back to it’s normal speed.

I’m going to be using Mozilla Firefox for this example, but the workarounds are pretty similar in IE / Chrome / Safari etc.

OK Step 1,

DISABLE All Add-Ons, Personas & Extensions

Disabling an add-on will turn it off without removing it:

At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Firefox button (Tools menu in Windows XP), and then click Add-ons. The Add-ons Manager tab will open.

In the Add-ons Manager tab, select the Extensions or Appearance or Plugins panel.

Select the add-on you wish to disable

Click the Disable button.

Click Restart now if it pops up. Your tabs will be saved and restored after the restart.

Still Having Problems? No Worries… on to STEP 2

Uninstalling Recent Java Updates

Keeping old and unsupported versions of Java on your system presents a serious security risk plus can bloat and slow down your computer.
Uninstalling older versions of Java from your system ensures that Java applications will run with the most up-to-date security and performance improvements on your system.

Here’s how:

Remove older versions of Java in the same way as you would remove any other software from your Windows computer.

Windows 7 and Vista – Uninstall Programs

Click Start

Select Control Panel

Select Programs

Click Programs and Features

Select the program you want to uninstall by clicking on it, and then click the Uninstall button.

You may need administrator privileges to remove programs.

Windows XP – Uninstall Programs

Click Start

Select Control Panel

Click the Add/Remove Programs control panel icon

The Add/Remove control panel displays a list of software on your system, including any Java software products that are on your computer. Select any that you want to uninstall by clicking on it, and then click the Remove button.

NB: Older versions of Java may appear in the program list as J2SE Runtime Environment or Java 2 Runtime Environment.

After this, do a System Reboot. See you in 5:)

Most of you will now find that your typing speed is back to normal. However, if the first 2 speps didn’t cure your slow typing lag, then it looks like you’ve got some serious proccesses running in the background that are bloating your system causing it to dramatically slow down and this can easily be addressed in Step 3.

Disabling Startup Programs Using MSCONFIG

Most people know that the more programs you have running on your computer at any one time, the more likely it is that your computer will either run slowly or even crash. What most people don’t know is that every time you boot your computer a whole load of “hidden” programs load in the background. Some of these hidden programs are essential, but most aren’t. Turning off some of these hidden programs using MSCONFIG can significantly increase your computer’s performance and reliability.

To access MSCONFIG in Windows 7 click “Start” and type “MSCONFIG” (without the speech marks)

In Windows XP click “Start” > “Run” and type “MSCONFIG” (without the speech marks)

You should now have the MSCONFIG box up on screen: Click the “Startup” Tab

When your computer starts up, it will automatically load up a ton of programs that you don’t need but will run in the background, clogging up and slowing down your machine. For example, on my setup Quicktime by Apple is set to run even when i’m not using it – That’s silly, so i’ve disabled it. Simple:)

NB: Only untick programs that you recognise as some of them will be neccessary for Windows to run smoothly. If you’re not sure about a program either google “Is it safe for me to disable *program name*” or check out http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_search.php which has a huge list of which programs are safe to disable or not!!

Once you have ticked / unticked your startup programs, hit “apply”, “OK” and then reboot.

By using the above methods i’ve sped up my machine considerably and it’s faster now than when I got it out of the box.

Have a great day folks and if you found this post useful spread the love with either a comment, like or share etc. Cheers!!

Many webmasters, especially SEO newbies, might not know anything about the 200+ signals Google use on their algorithms in ranking websites. There are a ton of websites that talk about this but only a quarter of those were provided.

Based on research from these websites, including Google’s webmaster guidelines and forum discussions, I’ve compiled them all and come up with a list of over a hundred.

What about the rest? They’re probably secrets that no one could ever figure out; only Google knows them. They can’t reveal them due to trading secrets, a delicate part of business.

In addition, The guys at SEOmoz have their own graph about search engine factors for websites. You can refer to the images below:

And oh, there’s two we can add on to that: the Panda and Penguin algorithm updates.

Here’s what I came up with:

The answer to these signals should be yes to achieve best possible rank in Google search engine:

As far as my sources and knowledge can reach me, these are the only half of the 200 Google ranking algorithm signals I can give you. It is difficult to figure out the other half possible signals otherwise we make unsafe guesses.

However, here are “my” other safe assumptions that I can give to proceed based on my personal opinion:

101. Is the site a problem solver for users?
102. Does the site have adequate categories and tags pages?
103. Does the site have no thin contents in every page?
104. Does the site have a good amount of organic backlinks?

To continue with Panda and Penguin that should be on 105th and 106th, and then extract into a number of sub signals to complete the list of 200. This could include issues of spammy links, duplicate contents, and other factors that the new algorithm updates can hit.

It still all boils down to two most important factors Google actually measures based on their ranking algorithms. Number 1, valuable content, and number 2, a considerable amount of good inbound and outbound links. And that’s it. The other half of 200 signals are probably broken into sub signals only God and Google know what.

Today we’re going to be looking at:

Analyzing your (and your competitors) backlinks.

Backlink Diversity.

Backlinking Strategy.

Going Social!

Backlink Analysis

There are a few tools that you can use for this process – My number one choice is SEOmoz’s Open Site Explorer which is free for 3 “goes” per day – If you need more in depth analytics, sign up for their 30 day Free Trial HERE.

It gives you details of everything from Anchor Text, Page and Domain authority, Links to the domain and Total links plus it gives you Social data eg Facebook, Twitter & Google “Likes, Shares, +1, Tweets” etc. Very, very useful.

You can also sign up to the Bing Webmaster tool which is free and it gives you info on your backlinks and anchor text which you can download into a CSV file.

OK, so once you’ve analyzed your links, let’s have a look at the results and see what we can do to get your site ranking again.

Example:

If you have 100 backlinks and 70 of those link using the anchor text “Cat Training” (Hey, I like to be different ok? ) then you will need to build more non “Cat Training” links to bring that 70% down to under 50% which will show a more natural backlinking strategy.
Concentrate on building more backlinks which link with your URL ( eg. http://www.howtotrainacat.co.uk) and also link using anchor text such as “Click Here”, “Check It Out” and “This Link” – You get the idea.

Also check out your other sites and competitors sites that didn’t get hit by Penguin and have a look at their backlinking strategy. This is not sneaky… This is just common sense.

Backlink Diversity

So you’ve worked out how many links you need to build to bring down the percentage of your “Money Keywords”?

Good, it’s time to get to work.

First off, you want to be building links from several different types of sites eg: Web 2.0, Forums, Blog Commenting, Article Directories, Press Releases etc. Don’t just concentrate on one type of site – Google has already penalized sites for doing this.

Diversify the pages that are linked to. If all your backlinks are pointing to your homepage, this will be flagged up as unnatural. Tip: Use longer-tail keywords to deep link to relevant pages on your site.

If a lot of backlinking sites are irrelevant to your niche, try and even that out with links back from similar sites to your own. This is notoriously hard, but does need to be done. Try the following:

Marketing (Social Media, Creating Content then promoting it, etc)

Networking

Paying for Links

Backlinking Strategy

Here’s a few ways you can build up your backlinks (I tend to have a strategy worked out in an excel file so I know exactly what i’m working on from day to day which I can always revisit and tweak – It’s handy I suggest you do the same or similar)

Blog Commenting: Leave interesting, helpful and useful comments on busy blogs in your niche. If these blogs are getting a load of traffic, they will be getting indexed by Google regularly and your comments will also be seen by like minded individuals.

Create Micro Sites: Set up a few micro sites and post content or articles on them regularly including backlinks to your main site. Use sites such as Tumblr, Squidoo, WordPress.com, Hubpages etc.

Go Social 1! Sign up to Twitter, Facebook, Linked In, You Tube & Google + Add selective people that are interested in your niche – DON’T SPAM!

.Go Social 2!: “Interact”, “Like” and “Join” similar niche pages on Social Networks such as Facebook, Twitter, Linked In etc – and post your links on your network pages – These people are interested in what you have to say!

Video: Create compelling content using Windows Movie Maker, Camtasia or Animoto and upload it to YouTube, Vimeo, Viddler etc. The more sites you upload it to, the quicker it will be viewed and/or shared around. Place a link to your site in the video description.

Pinterest: Post images from your site on Pinterest. This will get you a backlink, plus every time it is shared, you get another backlink – good eh?

Social Bookmarking: This is my first port of call when i’m promoting a new site or new post. Ultimate Demon has managed to help me get back to the top of the SE’s just with it’s bookmarking tool. Manually bookmarking, i’d hit the regulars – Stumbleupon, Digg etc.

Create a Press Release: and send it out to the PR Directories.
Here’s a list of the Top 10 Free Press Release Directories:

Free-Press-Release.com

Guest Blogging: This has become hugely popular over the last few months and can give you great results quickly. Search for blogs that accept Guest Posts (We do at TheDesignGuys – Get in Touch)

Right, that should be enough to be getting on with:) Even if you just put 4 or 5 of these techniques into action over the next couple of weeks, you should see your site moving back up the SERPS.

If you found this useful, show some love! Or if you thought it sucked, how would you improve it? Let’s hammer out some ideas!!

Part 3 coming up soon…

It’s by no means an exhaustive list, but every step will pull you back up the search engines and quite probably push you further up than you were before.

In Google’s Webmaster central blog post of 24th April 2012, Matt Cutts (Top Dog @ Google’s Webspam team) said the following:

In the pursuit of higher rankings or traffic, a few sites use techniques that don’t benefit users, where the intent is to look for shortcuts or loopholes that would rank pages higher than they deserve to be ranked. We see all sorts of webspam techniques every day, from keyword stuffing to link schemes that attempt to propel sites higher in rankings.

He goes on:

Sites affected by this change might not be easily recognizable as spamming without deep analysis or expertise, but the common thread is that these sites are doing much more than white hat SEO; we believe they are engaging in webspam tactics to manipulate search engine rankings

Studying the analytics results it shows 2 very clear points that have also been verified and backed up by the guys at Micro Site Masters (who tested thousands of sites)

If over 50% of your backlinks contain your “Money Keywords”, you WILL have been penalized by Penguin.

If you had very few links coming from websites in, or relating to, your niche You WILL have been affected by Penguin.

Recovering from Google Penguin

1. Analyze and Fix Your On-Page SEO

Meta Tags
Write your Page Titles and Descriptions in such a way that it reads like natural speech – Write it for the Reader rather than the Search Engines. Also look at removing or rewording “Money Keywords” from Titles & Descriptions (NB: If your site is an exact match to your money keyword, you “may” have some leeway on this)

Keyword Stuffing
OK it’s not 1999, you’re probably not doing this. If you are? Stop it . Try and keep your Keyword Density down to under 2% and your LSI under 4%

Duplicate Content
Get rid of, or rewrite PLR articles. If your site is mainly PLR content which needs reworking, seriously think about outsourcing the rewriting tasks on sites such as Fiverr

Hidden Links
Some sneaky plugins have been known to hide links back to their own sites to gain in the SERPS – Check your code. I’ve just checked mine and found (& removed) a 1×1 pixel link to LinkWithin – Not the done thing, chaps!

Footer Links
A few links are fine eg: T&Cs, Contact, Privacy Policy etc. But don’t go overboard and link to all your other sites just to get a backlink. Same goes for your sidebars.

I’ve realised this article is going to be longer than first planned, so i’m breaking it up into smaller pieces to make it easier to digest: Part 1 today (you’re reading it) and Part 2 tomorrow (I’ll be covering Backlink Analysis, Link Diversification, Going Social and more…)

So if your site has been hit by the Penguin update, focus on the On-Page SEO today and let’s look at some excellent Off-Page tactics tomorrow. Onwards and Upwards!!

How To Change The WordPress Login Image

Hey Folks, I’ve been commissioned by a client to build a membership site within a main blog and what better way than to use WordPress with a membership site plugin (I’m using Membership Premium from the guys at http://premium.wpmudev.org/)

The thing is, my client wanted a specific logo on the wordpress login screen and until the “Login Logo” guys came along there was no easy way of doing this.

Thankfully they created an awesome wordpress plugin which you can download for free below.

It’s extremely useful if you have either a membership or any type of multi-user site (OR, if you just want your login screen to look cool – ha!)

Description:
This plugin allows you to customize the logo on the WordPress login screen. There is zero configuration. You just drop the logo file into your WordPress content directory, named login-logo.png and this plugin takes over.

Note that you should use a transparent background on the PNG image, crop it tightly (no padding pixels) and use a width of exactly 312 pixels for best results. Wider images will be downscaled in modern browsers, but it isn’t recommended to rely on that.

Installation:

Click here to install and activate.

Create a PNG image with a transparent background, tightly cropped, with a recommended width of 312 pixels.

Upload the PNG image to your WordPress content directory (/wp-content/, by default), and name the file login-logo.png.

If you have a multisite install with more than one network, you can also use login-logo-network-{NETWORK ID}.png to assign a different login logo to each network.

If you have a multisite install, you can also use login-logo-site-{$blog_id}.png to assign a different login logo to each site.

Done! The login screen will now use your logo.

Screenshot:

FAQs:

Why does my image look strange in IE or an outdated browser?

Your image is probably too wide. Wide images are scaled down in IE 9 or other modern browsers, but not in older browsers. Use an image that is no more than 312 pixels wide.

************************************************************************

Well, that’s it for today folks. I hope you’ve found this useful – If so please show a little love with a “comment”, “share”, “tweet” or even a plain old “like”. Have a great day!

Hey Folks, Here’s a quick step-by-step tutorial for you on setting up useful tabs on the new facebook business pages timeline. This has increased traffic to my site by around 80% so far, but if you have a lot of Facebook traffic, it will make a massive difference.

I’m going to use a page on Free Guitar Lessons that i’ve had kicking around for a while not doing much so let’s set it up for this training.

OK, If you have a business page set up, go directly to step 5. If not, let’s get cracking…

Step 1. Log in to your personal facebook account and browse to https://www.facebook.com/pages/create.php

Step 2. Choose “Brand or Product” > “Website“. Enter your brand’s name and check facebook T&C’s > “Get Started”

Step 3. “Upload Image” Minimum dimensions 180px x 180px (Although FB resizes to 160px OR 125px depending on the day of the week;))

Step 4. Enter Basic Info (Tip: Enter site address – this will be at the top of your page eg. http://jamorama.learnguitar21minutes.com/ <– FREE Guitar Lessons. You want to make it easy for users to get to your offer / website)

Now you’re set up with a Business page, let’s add some “Call to action” Tabs.

Step 5. In the top box, type Static HTML and click on “Static HTML: iframe tabs” See “Image 2″ below.

Image 2

Step 6. Click “Add Static HTML to a Page” and select your appropriate business page.

You will now see the tab has been added to the header of your site. Now we need to go in and edit this tab.

Step 7. Click the downward arrow to the right then hover over your Static HTML tab and click “Edit Settings” (Image 3)

Image 3

Step 8. Here you can change the name of your tab (keyword friendly please:)) plus upload a call to action graphic eg. FREE EBOOK etc. Dimensions 111px x 74px

OK, now we’ve set up the tab, we’ve got to go into the code and point people to our offer / website.

Step 9. On your page, Click on your tab and you will see 2 HTML boxes where you can post your opt-in forms, graphics etc. I’m going to show you how to redirect this page to go directly to your site.

Step 10. Enter the following code in the top HTML box:

<a href="http://www.your-site-address.com" target="_blank">CLICK HERE</a> For Your Site
<meta http-equiv="REFRESH" content="0;url=http://www.your-site-address.com">

Click Save. (Don’t worry about the bottom HTML box – Not neccessary for this exercise)

This will redirect the user to your site within the Facebook look and feel, giving the user a seamless browsing experience in as few clicks as possible.

NB. Another thing to bear in mind: The last photo you upload to facebook will always appear in the first tab (photos). I’ve uploaded a right-facing arrow to make sure they know where to click (again tab dimensions should be 111px x 74px).

Good luck folks and drop me a comment / like / share if you found this useful.
